Doris Ray is a writer in Fraser Lake, BC. I consider writers to be artists, so she’s my featured artist for this week.
I caught her here on camera while she was doing a reading about an alien dog. The Cheeky Princess and The Marshmallow Kid both sat listening enraptured. I even chuckled a few times!
But things have not always been easy, which is what drew me to this wonderful woman. Her first book is called “The Ghosts Behind Him” (Caitlin Press, 1999) It’s about the struggle her family faces along with her son, diagnosed with Schizophrenia. I cried while reading her book.
Doris is an avid spokesperson for the Omineca Lakes Mental Health Association. They are dedicated to educating the public about mental illness and addiction and all the other “stuff” that comes along with it.
Doris allowed me to read another story for her that day, I was nervous to be reading in public, so I’m afraid I can’t remember the title of it. It came from a series of stories in a collection she made for her grandchildren about a world called “Fairyopia”
The best compliment I can give Doris is that no matter how blue I’ve been, a short chat with Doris Ray makes the sun come out again.
