Yellow Toadflax Rant
The Grinning Empress likes to keep things positive so I usually don’t rant online, but this is one of those times I’m going to.
I also hope you learn from my mistake and keep your gardens healthy.
The Most frustrating thing in my bubble right now is called YELLOW TOADFLAX.
You can learn a tonne about this plant including it’s other names, “Wild Snapdragon, Butter and eggs, common toadflax, ramsted, flaxweed, Jacob’s ladder” using Google, I found it’s scientific name Linaria Vulgaris I just call it a pain in the rear.
I have been trying to kill this plant ever since I discovered what it really was. It looks pretty but it’s taking over a patch of lawn between mine and a neighbors yard. I’ve tried everything short of Roundup to get rid of this invasive species. I’m at my wits end because I have been hand-pulling this weed for about 5 years now.
Look at it again, burn it’s image into your mind, now, And please, pretty Please take this out of your garden if you find it there.
It is even taking over the lawn.
Just rip it right out of the garden because if it gets into farmers fields it can hurt the cows. Worse, it could take over the WHOLE FIELD because it propagates above ground using seeds and below ground using extended root systems.
Why not plow it under and re-seed?
If you plow it you are essentially doing it’s job for it, because every tiny chunk can then grow up to be a big purdy flower that someone who doesn’t know better (Yes, me) who then let it go to seed, and guess what? Those little seeds can be viable for 10 whole years!
This website claims it’s edible, and this is the first I’ve ever heard of that so I will go do some hand pulling and give it a munch to let you all know in a future follow-up how it goes.
In the meantime, have a great day and be good to each-other out there!
I went out and actually chomped on a couple peices… They taste foul like dandelions do, and I’m still not sure if they are poisonous or not, I didn’t experience any side effects, (But I admit, I didn’t “Taste” very much)
